Inspiration around every turn…
Creativity, research and discovery are the heart of the Ned Smith Center’s education mission. Our innovative programs are designed to stimulate curiosity and encourage independent exploration, engaging participants of all ages.
Whether you visit us with your family, school group or scout troop, you’ll find inspiration around every turn as you explore the worlds of nature and art in our 500-acre classroom!
Every year, more than 2,000 K-12 students from across central Pennsylvania benefit from our innovative educational programming. Active collaboration with regional educators means that we produce programs and use resources that enhance classroom studies while addressing academic standards.
With more than 500 acres of stream, meadow and mountainside, the Ned Smith Center is the perfect place for programmed exploration, and our education rooms provide ample indoor classroom space. Popular programs include Nature Photography, Nature Journaling, and Pennsylvania Mammals, but we are happy to work with you to create an experience designed especially for your group. Click here for more information about our school programs.
While we can’t bring the Center’s lands with us, our education staff can bring the fun and excitement of the Ned Smith Center right to your location! We conduct programs with scout and youth groups in addition to schools.
Watershed Conservation and Aquatic Resource Teaching Trunks bring an authentic field study experience right into your classroom! Each trunk is aligned with Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology, and is designed to provide teachers with all the information and resources necessary to conduct a comprehensive review and study of aquatic ecosystems. All activities can be completed on or near school grounds with ANY available water source.
Trunks are available for grades 3-5 or grades 6-8, and can be rented from the Center.
The Ned Smith Center Faculty
Collaboration is key to the success of our programs, and we are extremely proud of the “Ned Smith Center Faculty,” a diverse group of respected scientists, artists and educators who volunteer their time and expertise to the Center, ensuring that we develop and deliver educational experiences that are authentic, meaningful and aligned with Pennsylvania’s Academic Standards.
