Saturday, February 25: Cruisin’ the Cosmos Winter Star Party

Join the Center and its partners for a fun-filled evening of star gazing! Simply pack your snacks, bring a bit of curiosity and join us for an evening of delightful discoveries! If you have a telescope, please bring it along! Star Party leaders and their telescopes will remain on-site until 10:30 p.m. Program will run rain or shine. Weather permitting we will head out to view the night sky. If the night is overcast the program will continue indoors with a lesson of telescopes. Presented in cooperation with Astronomical Society of Harrisburg and Millersburg Borough.

March 3-5: Bluebird Carving Workshop with Jack Miller

In this three-day workshop, you will carve a blank piece of wood into a “smoothie” bird carving, then paint details of an eastern bluebird. Both carving and painting techniques will be taught. One wood blank will be provided, participants may bring their own carving tools and painting supplies, or they may be purchased for an additional fee. Limited workshop space available.

WORKSHOP TIMES: 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Participants must attend all three days.

Sunday, March 12: Ducks and Geese of the Susquehanna River

Join Scott Bills, Retired Land Management Group Supervisor, PA Game Commission, along the banks of the Susquehanna River at the old Millersburg Gun Club Headquarters (2 miles west of the Ned Smith Center) to learn about waterfowl and their seasonal migration patterns. Plan to stay a few minutes or hang out all day for the 20th Annual Waterfowl Watch. In past years, we have been fortunate enough to spot majestic bald eagles fishing the chilly waters of the River. Please dress warmly. Binoculars, field guides, spotting scopes, a warm fire and hearty refreshments will be provided.

Tuesday, March 14: Spring Serenade with Stuart and Friends

Welcome spring with an evening of chamber music from Stuart Malina and special guests. This great evening of music in an intimate setting includes a pre-show and intermission reception!

Thursday, April 13: First Investigation of Stream Health (FISH)

Healthy streams are more than just clear water. The ideal stream has healthy land and vegetation around it too. Explore Penn State’s First Investigation of Stream Health (FISH) citizen science opportunity. Volunteers observe the plants and wildlife living in and around a stream to measure its changing health over time. This is especially important for seeing the first signs of success after a restoration project or stream side tree planting has been completed. Anyone can be a FISH observer.

Saturday, April 22: Ann Kerstetter in the Ned Smith Gallery

April 29 and May 6: Spring Bird Walks

Spring is an exceptional season for viewing migrating birds. Join our experienced leaders for one or both mornings to learn about identifying birds in the field. Not an early bird? Don’t worry. You will find us in the parking lot for the first 30 minutes observing birds and getting accustomed to using our optics. Novice birders and families are welcome! Binoculars provided. Pre-registration suggested, but not required.

Thursday, May 11: Fungal Fortunes

The field of mycology has never been more accessible to the public, with online forums, books from experts, and workshops in almost all major cities in the U.S. we are seeing more, and more, ‘amateur mycologist’ contributing to our understanding of Fungi! Learn how fungi, and mushrooms can be incorporated into whole system designs for the home/farm, and community for food, medicine, and remediation.
